MOVIE INSIDER: Ja Rule Plays Rough With Grier

Rapper-cum-producer Ja Rule played rough with Pam Grier -- his co-star in the upcoming indie film, "Back in the Day," which he co-produced with Ving Rhames.

Grier has the role of Ja Rule's mother in the family drama and says they had some very intense scenes -- but they managed to have a great time anyway.

"One day when we were rehearsing this scene where I slap him during a bitter, bitter argument, we started this mock fight. In the scene I just slap him one time, but I was like 'Come on, hit me, hit me' and he hits me, then I hit him back! I'm in a suit and he's in his hip-hop baggies and we were just beating each other up. At first it stunned everybody, then they started cracking up when they realized we were just having a ball. It was funny to see Ja Rule kick Pam Grier in the stomach, then Pam kick him back and he fly across the room -- it was right out of something Keenan Ivory Wayans would do in 'Scary Movie.' You know, 'Ghetto Movie I.' We had so much fun."

Far from wanting to slap him in real life, Pam's become a fan. "Ja Rule is a very smart young man," extols Grier, who's currently starring in Showtime's new 'The L Word' series. "He's very warm and very talented."

And good at stage combat, too.

The Hollywood Exclusive: Pam Grier goes from ‘L Word’ emoting to joining Snoop Dogg on tour
By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith - January 5, 2004

Pam Grier reports she'll be joining Snoop Dogg on his summer concert tour, if things go as planned.

"I've been nagging him. I told Snoop it was my ultimate dream, and he said, 'OK,'" says the veteran actress, who also sings and plays several instruments.

"He has the band touring with him. All I have to do is just bring my drums and sit in. I'll just open up his show with maybe 'Gin and Juice' or 'Let's Play House.' They won't know who the drummer is.

"I will come out and start the beat, then when he's ready to lift the lights up, there I will be. We will funk it up! I told Snoop, 'There's going to be steam and smoke coming out the window if they let me on those drums! They gon' have to pull me off! It's the Snoop and the Pam Skizzle coming to dizzle!"

Meanwhile, Snoop will be popping up with Grier on Showtime's "The L Word." The series, which debuts Jan. 18, chronicles the lives of several friends – gay and straight.

Grier is very excited that she's getting to showcase her little-known musical talents as Jennifer Beals' straight half-sister, who is "a composite of Minnie Ripperton, Chaka Khan and Donna Summer. Snoop comes into our show as a rapper who wants to sample one of her tunes."

She adds that the superstar rapper – with whom she's had a close friendship since co-starring in the horror feature "Bones" – did the guesting as a favor to her.

"He was on tour when we were shooting, but he was so wonderful and complimentary. He said 'Pam, I will drive to the ends of the earth to work with you.'

"I told the producers, 'If he's going to take the time to drop a concert and millions of dollars to come do an episode, we gotta be really good. We can't embarrass him. He'll never speak to me again, and it will hurt me."

PAM GRIER: FROM FOXY BROWN TO DESIGNING WOMEN (Los Angeles Wireless Flash)

The woman who starred in blaxploitation classics like "Cleopatra Jones" and "Foxy Brown" now has designs on a designing career.

Actress Pam Grier now spends much of her time running a design firm with her sister, Gina, creating everything from greeting cards to pot holders to mud-dyed cloth journals.

It's something that comes natural to Grier, who says she's always been into design and admits her friends constantly pump her for ideas.

But don't expect to see Grier's products in Wal-Mart. Her firm only sells one-of-a-kind items made by a select group of artists and she wants them to be considered "heirlooms" that are passed down to future generations.

Grier isn't giving up her day job. She co-stars with Jennifer Beals on a new drama, "The `L' Word," which debuts Jan. 18 on Showtime.
